Is there anything that signals the end of summer and start of autumn more than apple (or pumpkin) picking?

It's the definition of 'peak Fall' isn't it.

We don't get around to doing it every year but I was determined to get out to a local orchard this year and collect some bounty for turning into all our favourite appley desserts.

Tarte tatin, dutch apple cake, spiced apple beignets - what would take your fancy?

Whilst it was the end of apple season and hence the trees had already given up most of their fruit, the weather was glorious. That sort of crisp, late-summer sun that basks everything in a beautiful glow.

I feel like I had the perfect dress for the occasion too, kindly gifted to me by Lindybop.

A brown, checked button-down shirt dress, flecked with little muted red threads.

Soft, thick material in a flattering 50's silhouette. Paired with some little ballet flats and the obligatory Sussex trug (always thought that was an odd word), I was ready to harvest some apples and take them back to my fictional country farmhouse with Belfast sink and pair of spaniels ;)

We were oddly enough the only ones in the orchard - my initial thoughts of this were how wonderful, F's more that it reminded him of a horror film.

But we merrily picked away and heaved our haul home.

Well, I'll give F full credit for carrying our lot to the car!
