4 WAYS TO MAKE SOMEONE'S DAY.

11 July 2018 3 comments

I've spoken a fair amount about increasing our own happiness levels here on BTB.

From simple ways to better your mood to beautiful, positive mantras to brighten your day, and heck, I even have a whole series (14 months strong! I'm such a proud mother ;) dedicated to what's been making me happy lately.

But a part of our own happiness and self-fulfillment is linked with doing for others and giving back, so we ought to ask ourselves - what are we doing to make those around us happy?

I'm sharing 4 simple ways to make someone's day, most of them free, won't take up a lot of your time, and all them absolutely worthy and gratifying.

White eyelet shirt (This season's UK | US), Blue printed dress (old, similar), Flip flops, Straw bag.

I remember when I was in junior school, my best friend and I had a phase of being engrossed in all things spy, practising different codes and leaving secret messages for each other around the school. We had a book, or 'the Spy Bible' (which I'd frankly like to get my hands on again to reminisce) invisible ink, UV lights, the lot ;) And we had so much fun with it.

Whilst that was many many years ago, receiving a secret message is no less exciting, or at the very least endearing, today! F sometimes takes crudites to work and I've been known, on occasion, to cut some of them into little letters and hide them in the box for him to find later - tee hee! If you're less than adept with a paring knife then leaving a little post-it under the duvet, within the pages of the book they're reading, or somewhere else they'll stumble upon in due course, is such a sweet surprise, and might be just what they needed to perk up their day.

Whilst of course it's lovely to receive a compliment for something you've just done, it feels even better to be thanked for something you did in the past.

I don't think that thank you's are said enough. Whether it's in the workplace or exchanging favours among friends, we say the words but more often than not it's out of politeness, to sign off an email or a quick 'Thanks!' as you're out the door. Meaningful thank you's are the ones that lift our spirits, and what more heartwarming than to thank someone for something they did a long time ago. Not only are you letting them know you still appreciate it, but you went out of your way to say you remember.

Possibly my favourite of today's list.

Not only is this an entirely charming way to let someone know they're on your mind, it gives you an excuse to raid your Sweet Treats board on Pinterest and expand your repertoire ;)

I made my glazed rhubarb and custard tart and took it round to our neighbour as a surprise one evening. They called me up about 20 minutes later to say just how delicious it was, which gave me quite the spring in my own step!

My local farm shop sometimes has a gelato kiosk and whilst in the queue (for honeycomb gelato, my favourite), I saw a gentleman at the front of the queue buy himself a pistachio cone, and then proceed to give the staff member an extra £10 to pay for the father and son behind him. Honestly the sweetest thing I think I've seen in a long time.

No need to fret if you don't often frequent gelato kiosks though ;) I always try and give vouchers or coupons I'm not using to others, or give my parking ticket to someone else if there's time left on it, because it feels so great when someone goes out of their way to do that for me!
