You wouldn't think it to look at my collection now but I never used to wear blush. At all. Nor any cheek product for that matter. However I feel that now I've started, my face looks different without it, and I finally understand what people mean when they say they feel their skin is sallow or lacklustre pre a little livening up with blush. I've amassed a small collection of favourites now (we're going to omit palettes today too), so if you care to take a delve ;)

I used to think I preferred creams, but in all honestly, blush formulas have come forward leaps and bounds, and today's powders can be so creamy, finely milled and perfectly blendable, that you'd scarcely tell the difference. The Surratt Artistique and Burberry Light Glow blushes are the perfect examples in my eyes. Not terribly affordable but just such a lovely texture, I've a few of each now, which is pretty unusual for me as I'm drawn to trying new things over owning multiple shades of the same product. If you must pick but one, go for La Vie En Rose, a dusky rose that's universally flattering and perfect for transitioning into Autumn.

For travel or weekends away, blush sticks are by far the most convenient. I love the formula of Chanel's Les Beige stick and Laura Mercier's Bonne Mine stick, although Nars X Charlotte Gainsbourg and Ms Tilbury's Beach sticks are also up there. Whilst I do think they're overpriced, I can't help but love the Becca Beach Tints, again for the smooth, silky formula that offers a sheer tint and a little sheen. Fig, Watermelon and Guava are my favourite shades, the former being my most-reached-for on 'no makeup' days. And in the same vein, I reach for my Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer in 08 when I'm looking for just a hint of colour, and a fair amount of dew - it gives that glistening cheek in the best possible way, without piling on shimmer. The formula's really light and viscous, meaning just a hint will take you far.

There's something to be said for Benefit blushes. I don't really understand the hype surrounding the brand, they're generally not really for me, but my well-loved Bella Bamba still comes on almost every trip with me, like the reliable pair of flats ready to step in when your new, uncomfortable-but-fabulous heels start cutting into your ankles. Their Posie Tint has that same, dewy quality that I covet so much - all hydration, no shimmer.

An underrated classic are my Clarins Blush Cremes. Whilst they can look intimidating in the pan, the more stiff formula sheers out on the skin and sets to a powder-like finish - Rose, Peach and Rosewood are gorgeous shades. They're dinky too so again, great for travel. In fact, less than half the size of Marc Jacobs' Air Blushes (see that seamless link?). I think Flesh & Fantasy is particularly lovely as you've really a soft highlighter on one side, and a rosy blush on the other, giving you more options within one compact.

I'm sure it's clear to see if you're a regular reader here that I'm generally a high-end beauty lover, but I love nothing more than when a drugstore or very inexpensive item blows away my expectations. Today's case in point is the Essence Matt Touch blush - I actually picked it up at a mere £1 to crush for the photos above but it's peppy pinkish hue and smooth, blendable swatch caused me to spare it's life ;) A surprising find!

Although there are many to mention, I haven't spoken about favourites from palettes - hence no mention of Hourglass or Rimmel. Let me know what your favourite blush is!
